SR-166 TASK FORCE A little history: The task force was formed in 1998 as a response to a spike in fatalities on SR-166. They were able to have the highway designated as a "Safety Corridor" which made monies available to increase patrols and move some Caltrans safety projects to the head of the line. These efforts were very successful in reducing fatalities on the highway. For the next several years the task force met about twice a year to keep an eye on construction projects and collision statistics. In mid 2006, another spike in serious and fatal collisions required renewed efforts to be undertaken. New task force members were added and since then meetings have been held at least three times a year, and it has been quite active over the last 2½ years. The task force has helped push SR-166 to the front pages of the news, and that publicity helped to gain approval for Caltrans safety improvement projects, as well as improvement projects by the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG) and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG). Additionally, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS)approved a grant request for enhanced CHP patrols in 2008. As you can see, the task force has worked hard to make a positive difference on the highway. There are more projects in the pipeline. We continue to work together "Drive Safety Home" (our slogan) on SR-166.
